E-bike manufacturer range claims are based on flat roads, ideal temperature, and the lowest assist level — which is why a claimed 100 km often turns into 60. This estimator uses your battery's actual Wh capacity, terrain, temperature and assist level to give a range that matches the ride.
Why manufacturer range is optimistic
European and US regulations cap e-bike motor power at 250 W nominal, but the assist level — Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo — determines how much the motor helps relative to your input. Most tests are run on flat ground at 20 km/h with a small rider, in mild temperatures. Real life includes hills, headwinds, stop-and-go traffic, and a heavier rider. The difference between Eco and Turbo can be 4× in energy consumption.
What this calculator does differently
- All four assist modes in one view. See the range trade-off before you start.
- Temperature penalty. Lithium batteries lose ~10% capacity at 0 °C and ~25% at -10 °C.
- Battery aging. 500 cycles is typically when capacity drops to 80% of new. We age your battery.
- Terrain. Mountain terrain uses 2-3× the Wh/km of flat.
FAQ
Can I trust the manufacturer range claim at all?
Yes — if your conditions match the test. Flat, 20 km/h, 20 °C, lowest assist level. Anything else, expect less.
My battery is 36 V 14 Ah. What's that in Wh?
Wh = V × Ah. 36 × 14 = 504 Wh.
Does regen help?
Most consumer e-bikes don't have meaningful regen. Some have it on the motor, but the energy recovered is usually 5-10% of what was spent climbing the hill.
Should I ride in Eco and just pedal harder?
If you want maximum range, yes. If you want to enjoy the ride and arrive less sweaty, use higher modes — but plan to charge or carry a spare battery for long rides.
About this tool
This calculator was built to answer a question most online versions skip or oversimplify. It runs entirely in your browser; no inputs are stored or transmitted. The math is grounded in standard cycling physics and physiology models, and is suitable for hobbyist and intermediate training use. It is not a substitute for a coach, sports scientist, or professional bike-fit service.
